History of the BME Department at Kyung Hee University
In 1998, the Department of Oriental Medical System Engineering was established in the School of Medical System Engineering at Kyung Hee University. In 1999, the Department joined the College of Electronics and Information, which was newly established in the same year. In 2002, the Department was renamed as the Department of Biomedical Engineering.
About the BME Program of the Department
The Biomedical Engineering (BME) Program at Kyung Hee University provides multi-interdisciplinary courses that grant B.S., M.S, M.S. Leading Ph.D., and Ph.D. degrees. The faculty in the BME Department is comprised of internationally recognized professors from diverse fields including biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, medical informatics (medicine + IT), oriental medicine, and mechanical engineering. It is essential that tools from these different fields are necessary to solve highly interdisciplinary biomedical problems in nature. Research works conducted in the BME Department are also highly interdisciplinary ranging from neuroscience, biomechanics, medical informatics (medicine + IT), instrumentation, neural engineering to biomedical imaging. Collaborated research is carried out with the College of Oriental Medicine, the School of Medicine, the School of Engineering, and the Graduate School of East-West Medical Sciences. The BME Department has hosted numerous research projects including two national research centers: Impedance Imaging Research Center (IIRC) supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea and Functional and Metabolic Imaging Center (fMIC) supported by the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs. Also the Department offers educational scholarships supported by the Brain Korea 21 (BK21) program supported by the Korea government for research-oriented graduate schools. Clearly the Department offers one of the top-class educational and research programs in the world.
